THE HISTORY OF MATH MUSCLES
As a sophomore pursuing a degree in Computer Science from the University of Maryland, Leslie Bond accepted a job making $5.00/hour as a math tutor for engineering students. Little did she know that her desire to have a little “pocket change” would birth a passion that she would spend the next several decades living out. For over thirty years, Leslie has tutored and coached students in math as well as had the opportunity to serve her own children through home education for the past eighteen years.
During that time, Leslie has observed some common themes that exist amongst students who struggle in math. Typically, students who pursue help in a particular level of math are actually having challenges in the prior math level due to a lack of mastery in the more foundational concepts. Because math is cumulative, a shaky foundation almost always leads to future difficulties.
When young elementary-aged students experience math challenges, low math confidence as well as an aversion to and phobia of math often develop. With the 2012 launch of Math Muscles, Leslie sought to address these problems in her coaching sessions by helping elementary students to solidify their foundations. She accomplishes this with a seven-fold strategy. Click here to learn more.
