What is the difference between a Math Muscles Workout and a Math Muscles Boot Camp?

The difference between Workouts and Boot Camps are their formats.  The format of a Math Muscles Workout is typically a 6-10 week coaching session during which students are coached once per week.  The sessions often cover several different concepts.  On the other hand, a Math Muscles Boot Camp is offered during the summer as 5-day intensive.  Boot Camps tend to focus on fewer concepts so that students can be immersed in and hone their skills in one or two specific topics.

Why are classes listed with recommended grade ranges instead of specific grade levels?

The concepts that I teach are skill based and do not follow a specific graded scope and sequence.  Unlike in most other subjects, the math skill level of students can vary extremely widely.  Instead of focusing on age and grade, the focus is on pre-requisite skill levels.

How do I know if my student is a good candidate for Workout 101?

If your student is a 5th or 6th grader and cannot quickly, accurately and effortlessly recall their basic math facts when needed for long multiplication, long division and fractional operations and find math to be be overwhelmingly cumbersome, they are likely a good candidate for Workout 101 and should be assessed.

If your student is a 3rd or 4th grader and cannot quickly, accurately and effortlessly recall their basic math facts without a strong dependence on props or intense memorization techniques, they are likely a good candidate for Workout 101 and should be assessed.

Why does my student need to be assessed prior to enrolling in Workout 101?

I assess students in order to determine a student’s readiness for the session.  It’s important to ensure each student’s ability to comfortably track with the pace of the class.  Having mastered the lower addition and subtraction facts will prepare a student for the mental processes taught in Workout 101.

Why is it recommended for parents to sit in on the weekly coaching sessions?

The success of the coaching depends largely on the student’s practice and repetition between the weekly sessions.  A parent’s attendance allows them to learn or re-learn the mental methodologies and truth-telling taught thus enabling them to oversee a child’s daily review and homework.

For parents who are unable to stay the full 75 minutes, it’s best to try to attend during the last 15 minutes of class during which a review of new concepts is presented.

What is the typical outcome of Workout 101?

Students who have full parental support during the coaching sessions typically leave with increased confidence, understanding, speed and accuracy in arithmetic computation.  In addition, their attitudes toward math often becomes much more positive.

How do I know if my student is a good candidate for Workout 201 or Boot Camp 201?

This class can serve to support and enhance younger students' learning by supplementing their fraction foundations and preparing them for operations.  In addition, it can offer review and reinforcement to older students' learning by solidifying their fraction foundations and providing a link to their past or current study of operations.
